6 Leaf Peeping Sites Around the World

Sep 9th, 2022 · 3 min read

Am I the only one who can’t believe it´s almost fall? What is your favorite fall/autumn activity?
Mine is leaf-peeping. I find it so fascinating that trees that were all the same color just days later
have turned into a tapestry of magnificent and vibrant colors that could be hung in the most
beautiful cathedrals in the world.

Top leaf-peeping destinations can be found all over the world.
HINT: Find a foliage calendar to consult before you set out to any particular destination.

North Conway - Lincoln New Hampshire:

Vermont has always been considered the premier leaf-peeping destination in the United States, but New Hampshire hosts one of the most magnificent leaf-peeping drives on the planet. Visit late September through early October to see the Kanc highway, (Kancamagus), a roadway that climbs and winds through the White Mountains and displays some of the most picturesque fall spots, with bright vibrant hues sprawling in every direction.

Cedar City - Utah:

In order to get your full fall foliage tour in the United States, be sure to detour through the west. Many people don’t think of red rocks or deserts for leaf peeping, but Cedar City and the surrounding areas are some of the most beautiful in the west. Bryce Canyon National Park usually goes on display first, followed closely by Cedar Breaks National Monument and Zion National Park.

Acadian Coast, New Brunswick, Canada:

Take a hop, skip or jump up to New Brunswick, Canada and behold the majesty of the bay.
Seagrasses, coastal flora, and even a carpet of peat bogs leave nothing to the imagination as the entire area transforms to show off Mother Nature’s majesty between mid-September to mid-October.

Lapland, Finland:

If you are looking to explore abroad, make a trip to Lapland Finland in Mid to Late September. The same fall traditions may not exist in Finland that makes the United States unique, but some traditions cannot be replaced, such as leaf-peeping. Visit this area to find the exploding reds, oranges, and yellows climbing their way up the hillsides and mountains through the month of September. The best part of leaf-peeping in this destination is that it often coincides with the
Northern Lights, which makes it quite a sight to behold.

Vaud, Switzerland:

Switzerland should be added to the itinerary at some point for its leaf-peeping at Lake Geneva. Travel by steam-powered paddle boat or rent a bicycle and slowly make your way through the vineyards around the lake to get the full-color brilliance on display. You can even stop for a wine tasting afterward if it suits you.

Nokko, Tochigi, Japan

Take your trip east to Japan next for October to November leaf peeping opportunities. The best spots are around the holy temples, shrines, and gardens that are beautiful on their own, but made even more resplendent with the colors that show themselves during the Koyo (leaf-peeping) season in Japan.
